There is a comedian named Bill Engval who is famous for his punch line, "Here's your sign". Bill's point is that we just don't think. Many people wander around just doing dumb things. They are mostly harmless, yet there is a lack of even trying to think, that is scary. I worry about my clients, they are so often taken in by a line of BS and it ruins their lives for months, even years.
I had a client get taken for $2000.00 last night. She is so "in love" with a man that wants nothing to do with her, that a smart con artist picked up on that, and fleeced her. I have given her ways to try to get that money back, but I doubt she will ever see it again.
When I was a kid, it was still easy to pull all kinds of cons, and even set yourself up with a new name and start over. Now it should be much harder, but the thing is that people still don't think. Their actions range from sending money to Nigerian lotteries to collect their winnings (can you imagine!), to the "just about everyday" event of hearing promises and tales from people that they believe wholeheartedly. The letters I read in the paper show a lack of even basic understanding of politics and our legal system.
Sometimes the lack of thinking is harmless, sometimes it is extremely harmful (as in sending thousands to Nigeria, or wasting 10 years waiting for a man who is already married).
It is so extremely easy to check out facts and people these days. The internet is FULL of ways to do that, not to mention the old fashioned ways of calling, checking, visiting the library, or newspaper archives. People just don't . I don't know if it is laziness, the thrill of the drama, or a lack of wanting to really know the scary truth, but it happens all the time.
I do get the chance to lightheartedly say to some "here's your sign", we all make mistakes and can laugh about it....just like the silly remarks in the Bill Engval video:

...but in life, before acting on something, like sending in money or bringing a strange man from the internet into your home....Check it out! Take a moment and verify things are OK before making a mess that could cost you or another person.
