Seize the moment! Owls in flight

One of my favorite things in the world are owls. Some Native American cultures believe they are harbingers of death or bad news, others revere them for their insight, ability to see beyond the darkness, and their bravery.

I love them, I think that they are beautiful raptors that make our world a better place. Yesterday I was able to see an owl that I had never seen before. I am not an active birder that heads out with a checklist, but I have sat for hours on top of cold mountains to watch migrations of beautiful birds as they move to different climes. I guess I am a semi birder, if there is such a thing.

My latest owl find is the short eared owl. They are beautiful mottled owls that look like they are wearing mascara. They were chasing something is a grassy field, and there were three of them! Owls look like flying footballs and usually soar silently, but these owls flap around. I may have seen them before and had not realized they were owls at all, but might have thought they were hawks or other large birds of prey.

They weren't the only feathered visitors to show off for us yesterday. An eagle soared over the parking area before the group even got started, and there were a bunch of harriers making themselves known. The trip was for owls however, and unfortunately it quickly became too dark to see them.

The problem is we missed out on some owls because we went looking for loons, and other birds when we knew spotters were currently seeing five owls in a field, then when we had three, we went looking for more. When you hear of opportunity, don't scramble around (unfortunately we were captive in another person's car). Stay where you have the opportunity and trust your gut. You can't see all the owls. The owls in one field are doing the same as the owls in the next field and scrambling around just allows you to see the road, not the owls.

Seize opportunity after making sure it is what you really want. Don't settle or grab for things that aren't what you really want, like loons. When an opportunity is sent like an eagle soaring right over head. Stop and take it, then get back to work. It keeps you from missing out.

In life we can't have everything, nor do we get to grab all of the opportunity, we would run ourselves ragged, and miss out on other opportunities. Make a plan and seize the moment! He who tried to see and do everything, ends up doing nothing well.

Happy hunting!
